Many come to Mendocino County is search of small towns and quaint B&Bs, but Ukiah shouldn't be overlooked, even though it's physically the largest city in this lovely county. Ukiah itself is quite an attractive town, located on Highway 101, just a short two-hour drive from busy San Francisco and an hour's drive to the coast and towns like artsy Mendocino.

A typical small city, Ukiah provides the essentials that many other Mendocino County towns can't, yet it retains a small-town atmosphere, indicative of its pretty buildings, abundant greenery, and friendly citizens. As a matter of fact, Ukiah was recently ranked the #1 best small town to live in within California, and the sixth best place to live in the United States by author Norman Crompton in his book '101 Best Small Towns in America.'

Agriculture is the largest industry in this town, which got its start in 1856 when its first settler built a cabin in the middle of town. Thanks to the nearby lumber industry of long-ago, the town continued to prosper through the 1800s, and by the turn of the century, as steam trains headed into Ukiah, land prices were soaring and the town was already one of the largest in the county.

Today, according to statistics, Ukiah is home to about 15,000 very happy folks who boast a median age of about 35. Architecture here is largely Victorian, making it a great place to enjoy a walk around town, admiring the gingerbread-laced buildings that make the town so special. Art galleries, antique shops, and small specialty stores are plentiful as well, making Ukiah an ideal stop for a shopping trip.

The arts, in general, are important to the citizens of Ukiah. The city boasts a civic opera, symphony orchestra, theater company, ballet, and concert association. You'll also enjoy a few excellent museums in Ukiah, including the Pomo Cultural Center and the Held-Poage Memorial Home and Research Library, both touting interesting local historical facts.

Don't miss a chance to explore the Grace Hudson Museum, which pays homage to the city's favorite daughter; an artist who gained notoriety in the early 20th century for her exquisite paintings of Pomo Indian babies. You can also tour Sun House, her unique residence.

Annual festivals are plentiful and exhibit Ukiah's community spirit. In June, the city of Ukiah is home to the Fête des Pères Concours d'Élégance, a unique festival blending vintage autos and incredible jazz and New Year's Eve brings a family-friendly First Night celebration. The list goes on.

Lodging and eateries in Ukiah are typical of a small city. Accommodations include a number of B&Bs, several small chain hotels, and some privately-owned motel establishments. Meal choices range from well-known fast food joints to excellent ethnic restaurants serving up unique culinary delights.
