Birds and Landscapes of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan

Matthew Matthiessen, Ukiah-based birder, photographer, and speaker, will give a slideshow on the birds and landscapes of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan on Thursday, January 21, 7 p.m., at the Ukiah Civic Center. Last spring Matthiessen hiked and camped with five companions and local guides in the snowy mountains of Kyrgyzstan, and later drove and camped his way through the grasslands of Kazakhstan. Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous central Asian country bordering northwest China, is sometimes called the "Switzerland of Asia." Kazakhstan is a country of mountains and grasslands that lies to the northwest of Kyrgyzstan. It is the ninth largest country in the world and the world's largest land-locked nation.

Matthiessen's presentations are popular with bird lovers and the general public alike for their excellent photographs and the informative and entertaining narration that accompanies them. In addition to birds and landscapes, the upcoming presentation will include brief historical and cultural sketches of the two countries, and photographs of people and wildlife as well as camels and horses.

This Peregrine Audubon Society presentation is free to the public, though donations will be welcome. The Ukiah Civic Center is at 300 Seminary Avenue.
