The 8th Annual UkiaHaiku Festival
Local residents of all ages and skill levels are invited to submit haiku poems to the 8th annual ukiaHaiku festival and competition. Ukiah's Poet Laureate Committee is pleased to announce three major additions to the 2010 festival: a Spanish-language category, a new regional focus for most of the competition's categories, and a Spanish-language version of the website (soon to be completed). For information on categories, submission methods, prizes, and how to write haiku, please go to www.ukiahaiku.org. Submission forms are available on the website as well as at any of the county's libraries (including the bookmobile) and at Grace Hudson Museum (431 S. School Street). Haiku submissions must be postmarked by Friday, February 26, 2010.
Poets from Mendocino, Lake, Sonoma, and Humboldt counties will have a competitive edge this year, as submissions in eight categories will be limited to residents of those four counties. The ninth category, the Jane Reichhold International Prize (formerly known as the Contemporary Haiku category), will be open to poets from around the planet. Haiku can be written in the traditional ("5-7-5 syllable count" format) or the contemporary format for any category (see website for explanation of formats).
Submissions are free-of-charge and prizes are modest in all categories except the Jane Reichhold International Prize. For that category there is a fee of $5 for up to 3 poems and awards will be given of $100, $50, and $25 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. Winning poems in all categories will also be published in a booklet that will be awarded to winners as well as sold to the general public. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 18, from 2-4 p.m. at the Ukiah Conference Center. For more information, please call Theresa Whitehill, Ukiah Poet Laureate, at 707-462-4557, or email haiku@ukiahaiku.org.
