Techniques In Writing And Teaching Haiku

In preparation for the Eighth Annual ukiaHaiku festival, internationally celebrated haiku master Jane Reichhold will give a workshop on “How to Teach Haiku,” to be held on Tuesday January 19, 4:00–5:30 pm, at the Grace Hudson Museum (431 S. Main Street, Ukiah, 467-2836). During the workshop Jane will describe what haiku is, talk about Haiku writing techniques, update participants on "haiku rules that have come and gone," and discuss techniques for teaching students, including beginners. The workshop is free. Simple refreshments will be provided.

Jane, who lives in Point Arena, is the judge of the ukiaHaiku festival's "International" category, and over the years she has provided vital guidance and support to the Ukiah Poet Laureate Committee. Author of over thirty books, including "Writing and Enjoying Haiku: A Hands-on Guide," Jane is a major figure in the world of haiku poetry. She is a two-time winner of the Museum of Haiku Literature Award (Tokyo), and three-time winner of a Haiku Society of America Merit Book Award. In 1998, in recognition of her contributions to haiku poetry, the Emperor and Empress of Japan invited her to attend the Imperial New Year's Poetry Party at the Palace in Tokyo. But more than anything else, Jane is a delight to be with. Her love of Haiku as an art form is a reflection of her love of the world.
