Mendocino National Forest Needs Your Help
Between Ukiah and Covelo lie the mountains and canyons of The Mendocino National Forest, approximately 65 miles long and 35 miles across. The Forest’s 913,306 federally owned acres give users the chance to camp, hike, backpack, boat, fish, hunt, and study the nature of the area.
Sarah Wilson, an intern with the Mendocino National Forest, will be giving a presentation at the Mendocino Environmental Center (MEC) on Monday March 1st from 6-7 p.m., explaining what makes this area of wilderness so special and the role that volunteers can play to keep it that way.
Volunteer participation has enabled the cleaning of a campsite that had become used as a garbage dump, and installation of a vehicle barrier to keep ATVs out of the Wilderness Area. “I love the way volunteering at the forest includes everyone, from high school kids to retirees. Volunteers can help us to protect this beautiful landscape,” explains Sarah Wilson.
The presentation will be part of the Mendocino Environmental Center Full Moon Meeting. “During these meetings we hope to encourage anyone with an interest to visit the MEC and find out about some of the ways they can get involved in protecting the environment,” comments Hannah Bird, MEC president.
The Full Moon Meeting and presentation will take place on Monday, March 1st, 6-7 p.m. at the MEC, 106 West Standley Street, Ukiah. Call Hannah Bird at 707-391-0044 or e-mail: hannah.bird78@gmail.com for further details.
