About Gualala
Gualala is a small unincorporated town on the coast of Mendocino County. Highway 1 runs through this town of about 1,900 people, located at the mouth of the Gualala River and the Pacific Ocean. Gualala started out as a logging town shortly after the 1906 earthquake, but now tourism is the main industry.
Gualala takes its name from the Pomo Indian language, which translated would be "where water meets," which is in reference to the fact that the city is located where the river meets the ocean.
Even though Gualala is not technically a city, it does have quite a community, including a wonderful art center (Gualala Art Center) on the Gualala River in a lovely redwood forest. It also has a weekly newspaper the Independent Coastal Observer, known to the locals as the ICO. If radio is more your thing, then the local radio station - The Tide at 100.5 FM - is where you'll want to tune in.
Though Gualala is small in size, due to its beautiful location it has many fine lodging establishments, including hotels, vacation houses and bed and breakfast inns, as well as many fine restaurants from which to choose.
With the growth of Sea Ranch just south, Gualala serves as a wonderful community hub for the residents of the area.
Despite the fact that the town is in such a remote location, it does have high speed wireless internet access throughout most of the downtown area.
If you are driving up the coast, Gualala California is not to be missed.
