1. My husband and I spent a wonderful night at the Old Coast Hotel over Father's Day Weekend...we had taken the Skunk Train to Fort Bragg from Willits...and for those of you who haven't, DO take this trip...and DO, DO stay at the Old Coast Hotel!
The Old Coast is an historic building in Fort Bragg. The original building is full of wonderful antiques and collectibles...so much fun to wander the lobby and look at everything! The building has been completely remodeled, and addtional buildings on the property have been turned into wonderful, beautiful rooms.
We were fortunate enough to stay in the "Marilyn" room...yes...that Marilyn. The room had cathedral ceilings, fabulous furniture, a wonderful bed with REAL sheets...not the kind you would find in lesser hotels...The room was beautifully appointed, and spotlessly clean! The area of town is quiet...even on Graduation weekend!
Oh...have I mentioned the innkeeper, Rusty? Wow...helpful (he guided us to a GREAT restaurant for dinner, Mendocino Bistro!!), polite, attentive (made sure that there was a bucket of ice in the room when we returned from dinner), and accomodating (beautifully served continental breakfast on Saturday morning...delicious fruit and scrumptious muffins!
Stay at the Old Coast...I don't think anyone knows about it, or it would be full all the time...it's not...and that's our good luck...but it should be! We can't say enough about it!!

2. During Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in 2005, Pat G. and I decided to take a road trip up north and took Highway 1 down to Fort Bragg. We got tired from driving and the only decent looking hotel we saw was Old Coast, so we decided to stay for the night.

I thought it was a cool idea to have rooms upstairs and bar/restaurant downstairs! The guy who ran the place was super friendly, helpful and accommodating. I did find him a little odd, a bit like the guy from the movie, "Psycho," which totally freaked me out that night because the neighborhood was so quiet and felt deserted. I'm such a scared-y-cat-cat, I know, so I had Pat G. block our door with a chair before going to bed.

Anyway, he gave us one of the the nicer rooms, probably the biggest one in the hotel because we were the only one who's checked in for the night and for only $90. There's a big cabinet in the hallway filled with boardgames and playing cards which I found amusing. The room was spacious and comfortable. I really liked the fireplace and the king size bed with goose down comforters and fluffy pillows :-)!
