The Mendocino Coast of California is a small collection of ocean communities. Cities and towns ranging in size from less than 100 to 6,000+ people create this “island” community. We call it an island because every road leading in to the area is an adventure; there is no traditional highway commute to get here.
South of Mendocino “proper”, you’ll find Elk, Albion, and Little River. These small towns offer a number of incredible vantages for experiencing the edge of our continent. You can also partake of a large number of activities from leisurely golf, walks, and light hiking, to vigorous mountain biking, river activities, beaches, and water sports both above and below the surface of our beloved Pacific Ocean.
The Town of Mendocino is a well-preserved historical district. It features small shops and a very distinct environment. It is just north of Big River Beach ( live webcam ), and most of the city can see Mendocino Bay.
Further north, the coast features Fort Bragg. This is the largest city on the coast at over 6,000 people – still very quaint – and used to be a very prosperous logging community. After the local mill closed in 2002, the area has changed its focus to cleaning up and making use of the mill’s 430 ocean-front acres.
Cleone and Westport, both small towns, conclude your trip from south to north along the coast. A bit more rugged, these towns both offer camping and ocean activities including MacKerricher State Park and other state beaches and view points.
We recommend visitors take their time experiencing all the coast has to offer, which is quite a lot! Let us know what your idea of a good time is, and we’ll do everything we can to find you an incredible experience on the beautiful Mendocino Coast of California!
