Information about Pacific Star Winery...

Pacific star wines are striking for their concentration and luxuriant texures... the kind of deep richess and intensity of flavor one finds in a slow-simmered sauce,. Ottoson turns small lots of grapes... into some of california's most distinctive wines.

Our Classic Varietals

Chardonnay 2005 ~ $24

A trained opera singer and meticulous farmer, Pamela tends each vine, serenading them as she sits astride her big John Deere. Even those who claim to hate Chardonnay are surprised to find that they love this barrel-fermented medium style, not heavy on the oak or butter characteristic – and particularly tasty with flavorful dishes.
Bottle ~ $24

Orange Muscat 2010 ~ $24 New Release!

The Muscat grape, or Moscato in Italy, is probably the oldest domesticated variety and grown in more countries than any other grape. Lovingly grown in Calpella by Eddie Graziano, our Muscat comes from the last 135 acres left in California. Aromatic, just lightly sweet and frisky, with orange blossom, honey and apricot aromas – perfect for sipping with cheeses and desserts, but just as happy alone.
Bottle ~ $24

Viognier 2010 ~ $24 New Release!

A Rhone grape that almost disappeared a few decades ago, it has made a comeback as an alternative to more common whites. Made in stainless to retain crispness, it’s the perfect compliment to seafood and lighter fare. Viognier has a naturally high acidity and is a good match with oysters and our local Dungeness crab. Lucky enough to get a taste of our local abalone? ... this is the perfect wine choice!
Bottle  ~ $24

Carignane 2005 ~ $19

Also known as Carignan or Mazuelo depending on where it is grown (France or Spain), this grape has been a workhorse wherever it has been developed due to its’ propensity for large yields. However, when pruned extensively it produces a bold and fruity wine and is used in many of our blends.
Bottle ~ $19

Charbono 2007 ~ $34

Charbono hit a low of 47 acres left in the world just 10 years ago - all the remaining vines were old and weakened by disease, making ripening difficult and propagation uneconomical. Vulnerable to rot from early rains, we thank only the most dedicated growers for Charbono’s existence. Inglenook Winery made Charbono into Gold Medalwines at the World’s Fair for years … some still drinkable 30 years later. Our flagship, this lovely relic from the past is enjoying a rebirth. Eddie Graziano grows our Charbono in Calpella, Mendocino County.
Bottle ~ $34

Merlot 2005 ~ $19

From an organically grown 2 acre vineyard right next to Pamela’s Chardonnay, this Merlot has a complexity derived from the combination of small berry clusters, her expert farming, and the perfect spot, right in the middle of the Ukiah Valley. We made 300 cases and barrel-aged it for 30 months in European and American oak. It’s lovely by itself or in accompaniment with cheese, roasted meats and pasta with flavorful sauces.
Bottle ~ $19

Petite Sirah 2009 ~ $34

DNA science has recently been applied to grape varieties, identifying Petite Sirah as a cross between French Syrah (Shiraz in Australia) and the obscure Pelorsin. Created in the 1880’s by Plant Biologist Dr. Durif – the grape is known as Durif in France and came to California with immigrants at the turn of the century. Susceptible to rot due to its tightly packed clusters, it is notoriously difficult to grow, dipping to 2,000 acres in the early 90’s.  Winemakers have led the come back as this is the heartiest of wines; rich, dark, chewy, fruity and tannic.

Pinot Noir ~ $30

Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley is the perfectly moderate climate needed to evenly ripen fruit and develop intense varietal character. Our’s is 100% Pinot Noir, a blend of two vintages from three vineyards in Anderson Valley. Try with grilled salmon, chicken curry, or with any spicy and flavorful sauce.
Bottle ~ $30

Tempranillo 2009 ~ $28 New Release!

Spain’s dominant variety  (which has more vineyard acreage than any country) and famous for it’s role in the wines of the Rioja and classic Ports of Portugal. Since it prefers the highlands of Spain, the best growing areas in California need to be moderately hot with cool evenings like the foothills of El Dorado County. Our’s is 100% Tempranillo -  in its homeland it’s often blended with Grenache and Mazuelo (Carignane).
Bottle ~ $28

Zinfandel 2009 ~ $25 New Release!

“Lover’s Lane Vineyard” is in the middle of the Ukiah Valley where cool mornings and evenings temper the hot days, preserving the fruity character of classic Zinfandel. We call this style “Italian Table Wine” – made to go with any meal - medium body with a peppery character that goes perfectly with all the foods we love.
Bottle ~ $25

Our Signature Blends

Dad's Daily Red ~ $14 New Dad's!

Sally’s tribute to her dad Fred, who often lamented “…nobody makes Claret anymore.  I love Claret.” He was remembering the California heritage blends of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s when individual grape varieties weren’t showcased, but married together. Since the first vintage in 1996 Dad’s has become everyone’s favorite  - old vine Carignane and Petite Sirah blended with the rare Charbono and hearty Zinfandel. Don’t let the moderate price fool you, it ages beautifully and proudly stands tall. Lift a glass and toast to your own Dad.

"Dad's Daily is Heavenly." ~ Joni
Bottle ~ $14

It's My Fault ~ $14

A multi-vintage blend made to commemorate the discovery of the PACIFIC STAR FAULT – geologist Dorothy Merritts announced it to the world in 2006. Running directly under the winery, it connects to the San Andreas fault system 12 miles out to sea toward the northwest.  Keep a bottle around for those moments when “I’m sorry” needs to be expressed in a creative way. A great inexpensive gift too!
"It's My Fault Rocks" ~ Marcellus
Bottle  ~ $14

Charbera 2003 ~ $50  1.5 Liter bottles :$132

A one-of-a-kind wine: our 50/50 blend of Mendocino County’s rare varietals, Charbono and Barbera, and showcasing the versatility of these two lovely grapes and to complement grilled meats, salami, smoked and aged cheeses, sausages and other richly spiced and flavorful foods.
Bottle ~ $50

CORO Mendocino 2004 ~ $60

In 2000 Pacific Star joined 8 other wineries to bring recognition to Mendocino County’s rich vineyard heritage. Strict production protocol defines a sophisticated blending program.  EacEach winery’s blend is, by rule, based upon 40-70% Zinfandel and 9 other varietals can be blended in as components, but grapes must be grown in Mendocino County.  Sample blends are tasted blind 4 times during the year and carefully scrutinized by the entire group of CORO winemakers. Wines ultimately face thumbs up or down by a 3-winemaker panel before passing muster as a CORO. A minimum of 25% new oak and an entire year in bottle results in individually fascinating wines with a familial thread running through. Check the back label for the varietals used for this vintage.
Bottle ~ $60
