The furnishings and decor chosen for the inn reflect the classic lines and purposeful design which characterized
the American Arts and Crafts period of the early twentieth century.

Designs of the era stressed a return to fine craftsmanship and promoted simple, uncluttered interiors contrasting
the Victorian excesses popular at the same time.

In the tradition of these turn-of-the-century craftsmen, we have decorated the Coast Guard House with comfortable
furnishings, quality linens, the work of local artists and craftspeople as well as mementos of the inn's maritime history.

In a more silent nod to the necessities of the twenty-first century, we offer wireless internet access to our guests who need to keep in touch with the outside world.

We strive to offer you a peaceful night's stay and in the morning, a tempting, homemade breakfast.

Coast Guard House has stood on a bluff over-looking the rugged Mendocino Coast for over a hundred years. The inn, a 1901 Cape Cod, was once home to brave sea rescuers who performed their duties just a few hundred feet away.

Today it is a peaceful bed and breakfast inn featuring rooms with fireplaces in the main building and two private cottages with fireplaces and whirlpool spas for two. All of the rooms are designed with simple elegance and surrounded by quiet solitude.

This home of maritime history is a mile from the sleepy hamlet of Point Arena nestled between towering headlands of the Mendocino coast and dwelling in harmony with the harbor life of Arena Cove.

Mendocino Coast and Point Arena

Point Arena is a quiet coastal destination steeped in history and maritime adventure. It is located 120 miles north of San Francisco. It can be reached in three hours with the last half driving the spectacular Pacific Coast Road, Highway One. Point Arena is in southern Mendocino County twenty minutes north of Gualala and fifty minutes south of Mendocino village.

The traveler can experience a quaint town with the beautifully restored art deco Arena Cinema; small shops featuring the work of local artists; a few casual restaurants, spectacular, unspoiled and uncrowded beaches, and of course the majestic Point Arena Lighthouse.

Arena Cove is one mile west of Point Arena and Highway One. This location off the main road provides a unique solitude
not found elsewhere on the north coast. Arena Cove is home to the municipal pier and the dozen or so boats that make up the commercial fishing fleet. Most days the fishermen bring in their catch while mesmerized land-dwellers gaze on in awe. The Cove is also home to sport fishing, abalone diving, tide pooling and world-class surfing.

Things to Do

Most of our guests come to our inn for a relaxing and romantic get-away, to read in the garden, sip wine around the living room fireplace, take leisurely beach walks or visit with the locals at Arena Cove. But for those seeking additional adventure, opportunities abound!

The inn and its grounds are an excellent vantage point for observing the California grey whale whose migratory path leads them just off-shore. A closer look is available on charter boats which also provide service for fishing parties or diving expeditions. Fishing from the public pier just below the Coast Guard House requires no license.

Surfers claim the waves at Arena Cove are the best on the North Coast. Golfers can drive twenty minutes and play the eighteen hole championship golf links at Sea Ranch.

Kayaking and canoeing are popular on the Garcia and Gualala Rivers. Horseback riding, bicycling and hiking are year round activities.

Expansive and serene Manchester State Beach offers the beachcomber endless hours of strolling and tide pooling. The historic Point Arena Lighthouse and museum draws many visitors each year and is right here in our own back yard.

By far the most popular activity is finding an isolated beach. You can hike right out your door and up to the Bluff Top Trail for a spectacular view 300 feet above Arena Cove. You can enjoy at least twenty separate hikes within twenty minutes of the inn.

Point Arena and the surrounding towns of Gualala and Elk boast many interesting dining establishments, galleries, live theater and special events, not to mention Point Arena's unique African animal preserve.

Point Arena is home to a magnificently restored 1920's movie theater, Arena Cinema. Offering two first run movies every week, it is at once art deco AND state of the art.
