Oval sound hole with body scroll and two points. Flamed Maple back, sides, neck and head.Spruce top. Ebony fret board, peg head overlay, sunburst finish. f-4 Mandolins have a full resonant single note sound, good for Irish, Swing and Old Timey music. The Mandolin family consists of Mandolins, Mandolas, Mandocellos, and Octave Mandolins
Mandolin tops and backs are hand carved to create an arch-top
Mandolas are larger than Mandolins and therefore have deeper, fuller tone and sound. Tuned a fifth below the mandolin, the mandola has more sustain than the mandolin.
The Octave Mandolin- above, right, uses the same body as the Mandocello but has a shorter neck and 22 inches string length. It is tuned one octave below a Mandolin. The Mandocello- was patterned after, but not copied from a Gibson Style Mandocello. It has a 24 3/4 inches string length and is built relatively heavy. It's carved top has a tall bridge and is built to be played strongly. It can be a real canon in the right hands. The neck is slim and has a two way adjustable truss rod for low action and finger board radius for ease of playing.A-5 Mandolins
Triple layer binding on the body, fingerboard, and peghead. The head has ebony overlay on the front and back. The fingerboard is arched to a 10 inch radius, is 1 1/8 inches wide at the nut and has 22 easily accessible frets. Custom tail piece.Octave Mandolin to the left
This Octave Mandolin has an oval sound hole, same as f-4, but Octave Mandolins can be made in any Mandolin style body, such as A style or f-5.ORDERING A CUSTOM DART INSTRUMENT

Ben wanted a unique looking and sounding instrument that would have it's own voice. Dave Dart and Ben decided on a lute back or bowl-back design. The apex of the bowl is almost flat so that the guitar doesn't roll off the lap. We have been contacted by a number of Ben Harper fans asking us about Hawaiian style or steel guitars. Harper now has three Dart Steel Guitars. He played the Hawaiian style 1 on the song Glory and Consequences on the The Will to Live CD. The other two are unique bowl back guitars, as featured here.
The first bowl back was mentioned in Guitar World Acoustic no. 60, in the interview with Ben Harper- and played on the song When It's Good on Harper's Diamonds On The Inside CD. This one of a kind instrument is also featured in Guitar World magazine, June, 2003.
The second bowl back was delivered at Christmas time 2003 as an instrument for Ben to take on the road. The Bowl-back Steel Guitar has been written up in several articles
