The Japanese artist and master print maker, Katushika Hokusai, b. 1760, d. May 10, 1849, had an illustrious career which spanned 8 decades. He started at the age of 5 and commenced his professional career at the age of 18 when he became a student under the UKIYO-E master, Katsuawa Shunsho (1726-92), in Edo (Tokyo), where he lived most of his life. His first works were in the school known as UKIYO-E “ Pictures of the floating world”. These are genre prints depicting scenes of the Kabuki Theater, beautiful woman, bordellos, and popular entertainments. These prints appealed to the new middle-class. His first prints were published in 1779. Hokusai had a restless nature, changing his name over 50 times, his subject matter frequently , and his residence nearly 90 times. He married early, and perhaps married life influenced his art. During this period he concentrated on historical scenes, landscapes, and prints of children. In the 1790’s, Hokusai left the Shunsho school. His master, Katsukawa Shunsho, and his wife died during the 1790’s. He adopted the name Hokusai in 1797 and remarried.         The next 50 years were his Golden Age. He produced surimono ( prints issued privately for special occasions, program, announcements, and private verses), and illustrate volumes of verses. His output included over 30,000 prints, sketches, and paintings. He continued to experiment, painting Chinese-style landscapes and the Manga Sketchbooks, noted for their skill and perceptive rendering of the human figure. He also painted huge murals ( 2000 sq. ft. ) of mythological figures at public festivals. Hokusai infused new life into the field of landscape prints. His most famous work the “ 36 Views of Mt. Fuji “ ( 1826-1831) , and another series, “Tour of the Waterfalls of Various Provinces: ( 1831 ), are the high water mark of Japanese landscape print making, and the concept, skill and execution have never been equalled. In the 1800’s, Hokusai experimented with Western styles of perspective and coloring. At the same time, his art influenced the works of such Western Painters as Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and others. Still working when he died at the age of 89, he claimed he was seeking “ an ultimate truth in art ”.
