Tribal History

Our Culture of the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians

      Our Pomo people still live in their ancestral lands in northwestern California. The languages relate to the Hokan family of languages, related to the languages of people from the northernmost part of the state.

      Every year Sherwood Valley Pomo's hosts its Big Time. Traditionally set between its Tribal Administration office, the children's park, and the Native Garden. It is a celebration for the tribe to gather for its Tribal Members, honor its Elders, celebrate its youth. Big Times have been around to culturally gather with its tribe and surrounding community of tribes.

      Part of a deep California Indian tradition of indigenous trading, hand game gatherings, sharing information and location of where the best game is to hunt. Where to gather resources for its long line of basketweaving tradition.

      At the Big Time, large meals are shared where traditional foods are prepared and served such as seaweed and salmon, modern foods. We care to feed our community and honor the current and past elders who have supported the tribe throughout generations.
