The Admiral William Standley State Recreation Area is a state recreation area located north of the city of Santa Rosa, California, on the Eel River in Mendocino County. The park features 45 acres (180,000 m²) of redwoods and is a popular spot for salmon and steelhead fishing. The area is also a favorite place for hikers and picnickers.
The park lines both sides of the road which is often muddy and impassable after storms. Part of the Coastal Range of redwoods, theree's a stand of virgin coastal redwoods mixed with Douglas fir trees and a dense brush of rhododendron, tanoak, fern, huckleberry and all available for exploring in undeveloped trails. The park is not very big--about 45 acres, but makes for a nice road stop when driving long distances.
Admiral William Standley State Recreation Area is named for Admiral William Standley, a former fleet commander and member of the commission appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to investigate the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The park is North of Willits, 14 miles west of Laytonville on Branscomb Road.
